KOLKATA: Airtel gained more active mobile users than Jio in January 2024, the latest monthly customer data compiled by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) shows.
However, the Mukesh Ambani-owned telco added higher-paying 4G and 5G users than its closest rival in the same month. Vodafone Idea (Vi) continued to lose both active mobile users and 3G and 4G users, according to data released by Tray on Monday.
According to the latest customer data released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), Airtel and Jio added 3.55 million and 1.1 million active users respectively in January 2024, while Vi added 1.72 million active users. Lost a user.
The active data, or Visitor Location Register (VLR) data, published by Trai every month shows the number of mobile users who regularly use the mobile network.
Airtel’s active user base surged to 381.09 million in January, while Jio’s active user base increased to 425.61 million. In contrast, Vi’s active user base has shrunk to 194.96 million, according to Trai data.
According to the latest Trai wireless broadband user data, Jio and Airtel added 4.18 million and 2.39 million 4G/5G users, respectively, in January, while Vi lost 510,000 3G/4G users. Vi has not yet rolled out a 5G network.
In terms of total customer addition score, Jio’s profits were significantly higher than Airtel’s. According to Trai data, Jio reported an increase of 4.17 million mobile users in January, while Airtel reported an increase of only 7.5 million.
Vi continued to suffer customer losses, resulting in a further decline in its total mobile user base of 1.52 million to 221.52 million. Jio and Airtel’s total user base stood at 463.99 million and 382.48 million respectively in January.
Also, according to Trai data, Jio increased its customer market share to 39.97% (39.69%), while Airtel remained unchanged at 32.95% month-on-month. Vi shrunk to 19.09% (19.25%).
India’s mobile user base grew by 0.19% to nearly 1,161 million at end-December, driven by Airtel and Jio customer additions.
Overall wireless teledensity increased to 83.05% in January 2024.
Jio also strengthened its market leadership in the landline segment in January.
The carrier added 250,000 wireline users, increasing its landline user base to 11.29 million. In second place, Airtel added 100,000 users, increasing its wireline user base to around 8.41 million. However, third-ranked state-run BSNL has regained lost ground and added 360,000 wireline users, expanding its landline user base to 6.5 million, the latest data from Trai showed.
