Last week, China Mobile announced the official launch of 5G-Advanced (also known as 5.5G/5GA) on its network. 5.5G is the next step in mobile connectivity, promising improved speeds, latency, and stability over regular 5G. Oppo will soon announce plans to bring 5G-Advanced to its Find X7 series, and vivo, part of the BBK Group, will also join its ranks.
The vivo X Fold3, X Fold 3 Pro, and X100 series will be among the first devices to get 5.5G in an OTA update later this month. The iQOO 12 series and iQOO Neo 9 series are also scheduled to support 5.5G.
Images of the vivo X100 running on China Mobile’s 5.5G network were posted on Weibo, showing download speeds of 3619.19Mbps and upload speeds of 160.75Mbps. While these 5.5G network speed tests are certainly impressive, they only scratch the surface of the theoretical speeds supported by the standard.
5G-Advanced is rated for downlink speeds of up to 10 Gbps and uplink speeds of 1 Gbps. China Mobile’s press release also mentions millisecond latency and improved network stability.
5G-Advanced is still being tested in China and is currently operational in a limited number of cities. China Mobile plans to deploy its network in more than 300 cities covering the Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou metropolitan areas by the end of the year.
