According to a report from 5G Americas, the expansion of 5G technology is rapidly increasing around the world, reaching 1.76 billion connections by 2023.
5G continues to gain momentum around the world
Chris Pearson, president of 5G Americas, highlighted industry momentum and highlighted collaborative efforts to drive innovation and connectivity.
With fixed wireless access playing a critical role in meeting broadband demands, the industry continues to push boundaries and enhance global connectivity.
“The wireless communications industry is on the cusp of a new era driven by innovation, collaboration, and a shared vision for a connected future. New technology milestones as fixed wireless access continues to drive consumer broadband demand. is advancing unparalleled connectivity experiences around the world,” Pearson said in a press release statement.
North America has emerged at the forefront of 5G adoption, with an impressive 64% year-over-year growth in connections. By the end of 2023, North America will boast 197 million 5G connections, accounting for 29% of all connections in the region.
Significant progress has also been made in Latin America, with LTE connections reaching 582 million and 5G connections reaching 39 million by the end of 2023. Despite the advent of 5G, 4G LTE remains strong across the region, laying the foundation for future growth.
“4G LTE remains the most powerful technology across the region,” said José Otero, Vice President, Latin America and Caribbean, 5G Americas. “Due to a variety of factors, including the mass market availability of 5G devices and the completion of spectrum auctions, 5G coverage will expand and subscriber numbers will increase over the next year.”
Omdia predicts it will be a transformative decade for telecommunications, with global 5G connections expected to soar to 7.9 billion by 2028. North America is expected to host 700 million 5G connections by the same year, solidifying its position as the industry leader.

5G will remain dominant until 2028
Kristin Poulin, Principal Analyst at Omdia, highlighted the major changes expected, with 5G expected to account for more than half of all connections worldwide by 2028, and more than 80% in North America.
Additionally, 5G data traffic is expected to account for the majority of technology data traffic, reaching 76% of total traffic by 2028, indicating an exponential growth trajectory for 5G connectivity.
With all the attention focused on 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem continues to be integral to the digital landscape, with the number of global IoT subscriptions reaching 3.1 billion.
Projections predict that by 2026, the number of IoT subscriptions will soar to 4.5 billion and smartphone subscriptions will jump to 7.4 billion, highlighting the interconnected nature of the digital world.
The deployment of 5G networks around the world is showing considerable momentum, with 314 commercial networks as of March 18, 2024, and expected to increase to 450 by 2025.
This means significant investment in 5G infrastructure around the world, shaping the future of communications.
