MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines marks 30 years of internet penetration, which ultimately enabled the rise of the country’s digital economy, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) announced on Friday.
According to DICT, the Internet was first established in the Philippines by an engineer named Benjamin Tan.
“On March 29, 1994, Benjamin Tan established the first Internet connection in the Philippines at a network center in Makati City. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Internet in the Philippines, we are proud to announce that this innovative technology has brought into our lives, “Let’s take a look back at the advances that have enabled people to benefit from the digital economy,” the agency said in a Facebook post.

According to a 2019 interview with Mr Tan by DICT, 30 years ago, he was tasked with installing Cisco 7000s at PLDT centers after receiving training from IT company Cisco Systems. This training taught Tan the know-how and tools needed to connect to the internet.
Mr Tan said he was battling deadlines as he installed the hardware with the help of cemetery technicians. By the time the installation was complete, Mr Tan said he had become disinterested.

“The euphoria about this came so-and-so later. For me, it was just another job and that’s why there was no point in bragging about it,” Tan said.
Years later, Tan was amazed at the wealth of information available on the Internet.
“There’s a world of information available online. You didn’t have to fly overseas to do it, you didn’t have to beg or borrow or steal books. It’s suddenly there,” he said. Told.
