Somali President celebrates Holmud Telecom’s 5G rollout: a milestone in digital progress

The recent 5G launch event, which was also attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, underlines the government’s recognition of Holmud Telecom’s contribution to the country’s development. In his speech, the President praised the company for its significant impact in creating jobs and increasing interconnectivity, which are essential in an era of global technological evolution.
The President, who has led Somalia to important milestones in recent months, including debt relief and accession to the East African Community, commented: “We lived in this country without a phone, saw calls cost $3 a minute, and today we live in this country without a phone. He argued that telecommunications technology directly facilitates efficiency in service delivery across several sectors of the economy, with education, health, economy and finance being the main beneficiaries.
The launch of Hormood’s 5G network is poised to further boost Somalia’s domestic trade, expand its reach beyond its borders and support the country’s growth sectors such as the blue economy and construction. . The network’s availability in more than 30 towns and cities, including the capital Mogadishu, represents a major step towards achieving broader internet coverage and reliability.
The network will initially be accessible in Mogadishu, Kismayo, Galkayo and Baidoa, as well as Dusamareeb, Beledweyne, Afgoye, Melka and Doburi, with a coverage rate of 81%. The 5G rollout will occur at no additional cost to Hormuud’s existing customers. The current price of $20 per month for unlimited data is maintained and is comparable to the cheapest data providers on the continent.
The President praised Holmud Telecom’s contribution to job creation nationwide. “Consider the impact of his 35,000 workers on Hormuud.
