After KT Corp launched 5G plans in the 30,000 won ($22.2) range in January 2024, the new plans for low data users have expanded the options for Korean consumers. Telcos SK Telecom and LG U+ recently introduced similarly affordable 5G plans.
SK Telecom and LG U+ announced on Wednesday the launch of their respective 5G plans, with the “Compact” plan offering 6GB of data per month for 39,000 won, and the “5G Mini” plan offering 5GB of data per month. It will be offered for 37,000 won.
Both new plans allow consumers to use data at speeds of up to 400Kbps after exhausting their data allowance. This is sufficient for basic functions such as using KakaoTalk and browsing the web. In comparison, KT’s plan offers 4GB of data for 37,000 won per month.
In addition to these plans, SK Telecom has introduced a 40,000 won “Compact Plus” plan that provides 8GB of data. The plans that previously offered 8GB and 11GB of data for a monthly fee of 40,000 to 50,000 won have been expanded to include 11GB and 15GB of basic data, respectively. Existing customers whose monthly data usage is 6GB or less can save 10,000 won per month by switching from the basic plan to the new compact plan.
LG U+ has also introduced a 5G mini plan priced at 30,000 won in addition to the “5G Basic” plan that costs 59,000 won for 24GB of data, increasing the data allowance of existing mid-range plans to 9GB compared to before. Increased to 14GB. 6GB and 12GB respectively.
LG U+ has also expanded the eligibility age range for youth plans that provide additional data, and raised the registration age limit for youth plans from 29 to 34 years old.
