PHOENIX — Arizona’s brutal heat is upon us.
After more than 50 days of temperatures above 110 degrees last summer, Valley residents are preparing for another hot day.
One of those residents recently moved to Phoenix from Montana and asked the following question on Reddit:
How should I deal with the heat? (I moved from a cold place so I’m scared (lol))
More than 550 people responded. Others shared their own stories of coping with the heat, including one man who once left cheese in his car. (I don’t recommend that.)
People said:
Don’t leave anything in your car. Until now.
Never leave anything in your car during the summer. Not lipstick, lipstick, deodorant, fragrance, etc. It will melt.
Or a beverage can! The energy drink in the back seat exploded, leaving behind a beautiful polka dot headliner that I can’t explain in detail.
A few years ago, my husband accidentally left his gym shoes in the car and the soles completely melted (lol).
I left a candle in the trunk. At least my car smelled amazing.
If you have children, never leave unfinished milk unattended.
I accidentally misplaced it and lost one of the crocodiles. It didn’t melt. It shrunk as if it had shrunk from the heat.
crayon! What a nightmare it was!
Newer vintage Mercedes don’t have cheese in them.
keep your car cool
In the summer, crack your car windows, put a sunshade on your windshield, and park under a tree if possible.
Don’t get too attached to your car’s paint job unless you can park it completely out of the sun all the time. Some brands and colors are better than others, but the sun and heat will degrade the paint.
During the summer, it’s a good idea to carry a cooler filled with ice and water with you when you drive. If your car has a problem and you’re stranded on the highway, highway patrol officers and other drivers will stop in the heat to help you. But waiting for help will be hot and miserable. Water hydrates you and makes you feel alive.
I always keep an oven mitt in my car as a handle.
don’t touch anything
Do not touch metal.
If you feel like you’re about to pass out, you’ll trip over a patch of grass, just like my co-worker tripped over a patch of grass on a 115-degree summer day.
Cover the steering wheel. What about the buckle? When parking, be sure to cover it or place an ice pack over it. Be prepared to touch the handle and other door handles as carefully as possible. I usually carry a cotton gauze scarf to prevent skin exposure. This will help prevent the metal from being exposed in the sun.

No bare feet allowed
Don’t check your mail barefoot. Your feet will burn and develop blisters. I learned that the hard way.
be careful with your pets
If you have pets, make sure they wear shoes before and after the sun comes out. Cement retains heat. It’s incredibly hot.

Please change your schedule
Change your habits to morning/evening. I run during the day from October to April and shift to early mornings in the summer. Even at 6am, the temperature is in the high 70s/low 80s, which is actually pretty nice.
Make plans to go for dinner after the sun goes down. Local businesses are pretty quiet during the summer, so it’s a good time to check out all the trendy spots that usually require reservations.
Keep water handy
Always bring a water/refillable water bottle with you when you leave the house.
If you’re not peeing, you’re not drinking enough fluids.
Start drinking more water now than you can tolerate, so as not to shock your body when it gets very hot. Add electrolytes such as IV fluids.
hibernation state
It’s inside! Just like you don’t want to go outside during a bad snowstorm, of course when the worst happens, I just hunker down indoors in the air conditioning and just stay there.
The opposite is true here. During the summer, we stay home, gain weight, and become depressed.
Do not leave your house from June to September.
avoid a hot kitchen
Eat cold foods like salads instead of hot foods that heat up your kitchen.
If I want a hot meal, I use the air fryer or crockpot, but really summer is all about sandwiches and salads.
