On March 13, 2024, SoftBank Corp. (TOKYO: 9434) announced a new service called “Private 5G (dedicated type)” that allows companies and local governments to build customized 5G networks by installing dedicated base stations on their premises. ” service has started.
Private 5G (dedicated) service is a service in which SoftBank installs network equipment at customer sites and combines it with independently allocated frequencies to construct a dedicated closed network. The service will enable enterprise customers to create private 5G network environments outside of traditional public 5G service areas provided by carriers. The launch of private 5G (dedicated) services follows the introduction of shared services, which SoftBank first launched in March 2023.
How is a dedicated service different from a shared service? A shared service utilizes a technology called “network slicing” to divide sections of SoftBank’s public 5G network according to customer usage. . With dedicated services, SoftBank will install equipment and base stations directly on the customer’s premises. This closed 5G network has approximately one-fifth of the latency compared to shared services* that relay traffic to public 5G core network equipment, and has enhanced security as data is processed on-site. .
Speed and security ideal for smart factories
Private 5G (dedicated) services are ideal for customers looking for advanced network solutions and low latency, and are ideal for customers operating smart factories.
With the launch of private 5G (dedicated type), SoftBank will open a technology verification area at SoftBank Robotics Corp.’s SoftBank Robotics Logistics Innovation Lab in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture, just east of Tokyo. The lab utilizes logistics solutions such as the high-density automated warehouse system “AutoStore” and automated guided vehicles (AGVs).
