Australia’s mobile services revenue is expected to grow from $8.7 billion in 2023 to $10.8 billion by 2028.GlobalData says in its latest Australian mobile broadband forecast for Q4 2023 that the expected CAGR of 4.5% in mobile services revenue in Australia is primarily due to a surge in mobile data services revenue.
GlobalData said it expects a surge in mobile data services revenue to offset the decline in mobile voice services revenue during the forecast period.
Australian mobile voice services revenue is expected to decline at a CAGR of 1.6% from 2023 to 2028 as consumer preferences shift towards over-the-top (OTT) communication platforms.
Australia’s mobile data revenue is expected to grow significantly at a CAGR of 5.7% over the same period. This surge is being driven by factors such as continued growth in mobile internet subscriptions, growing adoption of 5G services, and rising average mobile data revenue per user (ARPU).
“Average monthly mobile data usage in Australia will increase from 14.4GB in 2023 to 2028, due to increased consumption of online video and social media content rather than smartphones, thanks to data-centric offers offered by telcos. It is expected to increase to 28.7GB for 4G and 5G service plans,” said Sarwat Zeeshan, Telecom Analyst at GlobalData.
GlobalData expects the adoption of 5G services to surge due to growing consumer demand for high-speed connectivity and the continued expansion of 5G networks by major carriers across the United States.
Notably, TPG Telecom is actively rolling out 1,000 additional 5G mobile sites each year from 2023 to 2025. By 2028, 5G contracts are expected to account for the majority of total mobile contracts, accounting for an 82.4 percent share.
Telstra will emerge as the leading player in the Australian mobile services market in terms of mobile subscription numbers in 2023, closely followed by Optus and TPG Telecom.
Telstra is poised to maintain its dominance into 2028, powered by a strong focus on expanding and modernizing its 5G network. Telstra aims to cover 95% of the country’s population with 5G by 2025, according to GlobalData.
