NEW DELHI: Comviva, a provider of operations support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS), has launched a 5G-driven application programming interface (API) that is likely to help carriers drive 5G revenue. He said that he is contributing to the development of generation network.
“There is an initiative by the GSMA called Open Gateway, and the camera project is an integral part of that. We aim to standardize a 5G API that is easy to use for enterprises and aggregators. This will enable SIM swapping, Some use cases include silent authentication, quality on demand, etc.,” Deshbandhu Bansal, COO of Messaging Solutions at Comviva, said in an interview with ETTelecom.
Open Gateway is a network API framework that provides developers with access to carrier networks. The company aims to help developers and cloud providers power and rapidly deploy services across communications networks.
The framework was launched nearly a year ago with eight APIs and backed by 21 telcos including Ericsson, Nokia, India’s Bharti Airtel, US-based AT&T and Verizon. . Additionally, APIs such as IMEI fraud, KYC input, device location, and mobile quality on demand are now available.
APIs allow software components to communicate with each other. According to the GSMA, telcos can start monetizing their APIs as soon as they launch commercially, with the industry body pegging the overall market opportunity at his staggering $300 billion.
Deshbandhu said that while silent authentication and SIM swapping are two low-hanging fruit right now, implementing quality on demand is relatively complex. “…With location APIs and quality on demand, you can deliver an enhanced experience to your users and monetize those who are willing to pay a premium.”
He said quality on demand for 5G-connected cars and low-latency gaming are also use cases the industry is excited about. “It’s not widespread… Some carriers are launching APIs in Europe. We’re working with more carriers to launch this.”
Comviva’s Messaging Solutions business unit provides a white-label Communications Platform-as-a-Service (CPaaS) platform and works with more than 50 carriers, cloud companies, aggregators, and enterprises. The company recently partnered with Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC) and Giza Systems to launch an API marketplace for telcos to help drive B2B revenue.
However, Deshbandhu said 5G-driven CPaaS use cases are unlikely to emerge in India in the short term as availability of fifth-generation networks is patchy. He added that SMS and WhatsApp remain widely used communication channels.
Comviva sees several use cases built on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) emerging in the future, and AI is a big focus area. Comviva’s Messaging Solutions division includes his 50-person research and development team.
Juniper Research predicts the global CPaaS market to grow 102% from $28 billion in 2024 to $58 billion in 2028. The commerce industry is expected to drive traffic and revenue across communication channels.
