Moto G Power 5G (2024) Intro

Motorola is once again making a name for itself in the North American midrange market with the arrival of the Moto G Power 5G (2024), which improves on last year’s iteration of the same device and clearly improves the Moto G lineup.

Available in two colorways, the device is flexible enough that despite only having one RAM and storage configuration, you can expand both using a microSD card. For midrangers, this is a very solid option with a lot to offer.

The release date is set for March 22, and the phone will be available on most major and small carriers in the US (T-Mobile, Metro by). T-mobileAT&T, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket Wireless, Straight Talk, Total verizon, Walmart Family Mobile, and Visible. Additionally, starting March 29th, you will be able to purchase the unlocked device for $299.99 from Amazon, Best Buy, and Motorola.com.

In addition to this Moto G Power 5G (2024), Motorola will also launch a cheaper vanilla Moto G edition. Read our review of Moto G 5G (2024) here.

Moto G Power 5G (2024) design and display

A mid-ranger with a sophisticated look

Improving last year’s model, the phone’s size has increased slightly in both height and width while maintaining the same thickness. Additionally, compared to last year’s version, the phone is 16 grams heavier, making this year’s design a bit more manageable (keep that in mind if you prefer your phone to be lighter).

However, the design of the phone seems to have been thoughtfully updated in every way. The corners are slightly sharp, it comes in two distinctly chic color options (midnight blue and pale lilac), and most importantly, it features a striking, smooth, matte vegan leather back that repels unsightly fingerprints. .

The rest of the phone uses a plastic frame, but it feels sturdy and well-built, giving users confidence in its durability. The overall aesthetic of the phone is sleek, modern, and minimalistic.

Also, although not waterproof, the phone is designed to be water repellent, forming a barrier against moderate water exposure such as accidental spills, splashes, sweat, and light rain. This does not mean you can swim with it, as it is not designed to be submerged and has no official IP rating.

Besides the device itself, inside the box you’ll find a USB Type-C charging cable, a SIM removal tool, and a 30W charging brick, an item that rarely comes with phones these days.

The IPS LCD display with a maximum brightness of 500 nits is plenty bright for a midranger. However, it may be slightly difficult to see outdoors under direct sunlight. Full HD+ (2400 x 1080) resolution screen provides crisp text. Colors are vibrant and viewing angles are decent for an LCD screen, but it’s not an OLED screen, so that’s one of the big compromises here. The good news is that it has a variable 120Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling.

The bezels are what you would expect from a phone of this category. It’s not so big that you feel like you’ve stepped into another era, especially at the bottom.

The buttons on the device are also a given. Separate up and down volume buttons are placed on the right side of the device above the power button, while a combined SIM and microSD card slot is placed on the left side.

The power button also functions as a fingerprint reader, which we found to be accurate in our testing. In addition to fingerprint unlock, Moto G Power 5G features face unlock as an alternative biometric security method.

Moto G Power 5G (2024) Camera

Moto G Power 5G (2024) ReviewMoto G Power 5G (2024) Review
The Moto G Power 5G (2024) maintains the same 50MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture as its predecessor, but adds camera systems such as optical image stabilization (OIS). Motorola uses quad pixel technology. This is basically the company’s fancy way of saying that it does pixel binning by combining four pixels into one, up to a resolution of 12.5MP. This main camera captures video at 1080p, 60 or 30fps.

The biggest improvement in terms of cameras compared to last year’s model is the secondary camera, which has been significantly improved. This time, instead of the 2MP depth/macro lens, it has an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle lens, which can be used not only for macro photography but also for wide-angle shots and 1080p 30fps videos. On the front, there is his 16MP selfie camera with f/2.4 aperture and it can also record 1080p videos at 30 frames per second.

When it comes to photo quality, I’d say this is a solid backup camera, but it won’t win any awards. During the day, the main camera performs well, producing fairly sharp shots when natural light is at its peak. In some cases, I found the colors to be a little too saturated.

The camera had the most problems when trying to zoom in more than 3x, as the images tended to lose a lot of sharpness and detail. Overall image quality was OK for a smartphone camera, but not exceptional.

Low light is also a weakness for both the main lens and the ultra-wide-angle lens, and we found images taken at night to be very grainy and lacking clarity. The selfie camera can take good photos in well-lit areas, but the main camera’s night vision mode doesn’t support it.

video quality

Both rear cameras capture video at 1080p, but the main camera can do both 60 and 30 frames per second, while the ultrawide camera has the advantage of only capturing 30 fps. Video quality is not bad. It has the same weaknesses as photo mode, especially when it comes to zooming. At 6x, the video was completely corrupted and virtually unusable. The optical image stabilization was adequate for a mid-ranger, but it didn’t completely eliminate all movement from activities like walking down the street.

Moto G Power 5G (2024) performance and benchmarks

A device that provides sufficient performance for daily work

The device comes in just one configuration with 8GB of RAM, which is plenty for this price class. Motorola says it can be expanded up to 16GB by using the phone’s internal storage as virtual memory to boost the RAM.

Performance is pretty stable when I’m running a few tasks, but I found it stalled a bit when I had too many apps running and tried to switch between them. This is despite the MediaTek Dimensity 7020 processor, which is octa-core and good for gaming and multitasking. However, the device still offered decent performance overall, so it wasn’t a huge issue for me.

Performance benchmark:

As you can see in the benchmarks above, the Moto G Power 5G doesn’t have the best benchmarks, but it still performs well enough for everyday tasks. After all, benchmarks are only one piece of the puzzle when considering a device, and what really matters is actual performance.

Internal storage defaults to 128GB. However, it can be expanded up to 1TB using a microSD card. It’s important to note that in addition to the effects of a RAM boost, available storage space can also vary depending on operating system files and updates.

Moto G Power 5G (2024) Software

The Moto G Power 5G ships with Android 14 out of the box, prompts you for a software update right away during setup, and the phone is compatible with the January 2024 security patch. As expected, the device uses the My UX skin on Android. This is very similar to Google’s own Pixel UI skin. This made the experience of using the phone very familiar and simple. However, Motorola has a few extra tricks up its sleeve when it comes to gestures and personalization features.
If I had to choose my favorite feature, it would be Moto Actions. Quickly and easily access commonly used functions with simple hand gestures. My favorite gesture is the “three finger screenshot” feature. Capturing screenshots becomes very easy.

Other honorable mentions include the “Chop Chop” motion that turns on the flashlight and the “Twist” motion that launches the camera app. When it comes to features that don’t require gestures, I really like the ability to create folders in the app drawer for better organization and accessibility. I hope more stock launchers have this feature.

Additionally, Motorola confirmed that the Moto G Power will receive one operating system upgrade and three years of bi-monthly security updates. This means this device will receive up to Android 15.

Moto G Power 5G (2024) Battery

Great battery life even when you push the limits
Moto G Power 5G (2024) ReviewMoto G Power 5G (2024) Review
The Moto G Power 5G (2024)’s 5000mAh battery is unchanged from last year’s model, except this time Motorola has enhanced its charging capabilities by introducing fast 30W wired “TurboPower” charging. Additionally, a 30W charging brick is included in the box, so you don’t need to buy it separately. It also includes 15W wireless charging, which is impressive for a device in this price category.

When we tested this device, we found that the battery performed very well in both heavy and regular use. In normal use, I was able to get about 24 hours of battery life on a single charge with only occasional checking of notifications, email, and light social media networking. All of the above, plus heavy streaming music, video, and navigation, reduced the battery life to about 8 hours on a single charge before I was forced to plug in the charger.

Moto G Power 5G (2024) audio quality and haptics

With stereo speakers on the bottom edge, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Dolby Atmos support, the Moto G Power 5G is definitely a great entertainment device. The speakers get surprisingly loud. However, as is to be expected with smartphone speakers, the bass isn’t very loud. That said, audio quality is still good for casual listening. The haptic feedback of the device is average. It’s certainly timely and responsive, but it doesn’t have the depth or punch of higher-end devices.

Moto G Power 5G (2024) overview and final verdict

Moto G Power 5G (2024) ReviewMoto G Power 5G (2024) Review

The Moto G Power 5G is a solid mid-range option for those looking for a reliable device with decent performance and good battery life. With an MSRP of US$299, it’s definitely an attractive option, but it may face stiff competition from other devices in its price range.

Some comparable alternatives worth mentioning are Samsung Galaxy A25 5G and OnePlus Nord N30 5G.

My experience when testing this device was overall very positive, with smooth performance and impressive battery life. While we wouldn’t recommend it as a device for taking precious family photos, it can certainly get the job done in the right environment. However, if you are looking for a device that looks premium, can be used all day long, can perform daily tasks reliably, and is very affordable, then the Moto G Power 5G (2024) is your choice. I was able to get to the back.
