The new pilot zone consists of the entire Jinqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone and major roads such as Shenjiang Road, Hunan Expressway, and Lianggang Expressway. Shanghai currently has 1,003 public roads for autonomous driving tests, with a total length of more than 2,000 kilometers.
Self-driving companies must first pass a road test, pilot application, and pilot operation before putting driverless cars into commercial operation. To date, Shanghai has granted licenses for road tests, test applications, and test operations to 794 vehicles from 32 companies, including General Motors, which received road test permits in August last year.
