Chat With the increasing use and availability of artificial intelligence such as GPT, Copilot, and Gemini, church leaders are considering how to best leverage AI as a tool to support ongoing recovery, says Quorum of the Twelve Elder Gerrit W. Gong said Wednesday. , March 13th.
“Through the ongoing Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, emerging technologies in construction, communication, and transportation will enable this great work to reach and touch people of every nation, kindred, language, and people. ,” Elder Gong said at the beginning of his address. Presented to thousands of church officials around the world.
Elder Gong and Elder John C. Pingree, Jr., a General Authority Seventy, addressed staff of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the church office building. Elder Gong serves as co-chair of the Church Communications Committee. Elder Pingree serves as the Executive Director of the Correlation Department.
In April 2018 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson taught that an individual’s spiritual survival depends on his or her ability to follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost.
“In the coming days, it will be impossible to live spiritually without the guidance, direction, comfort and constant influence of the Holy Spirit,” he said.
Elder Gong encouraged Church officials to prayerfully consider the appropriate use of AI with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He said AI cannot replace revelation, but it can be a powerful tool for learning truth.
Other departments in the church are using and considering AI to help members in a variety of ways, including family history work, language translation, process automation, and other support.
Elder Gong said individuals “must not be blinded or alarmed” about the use of AI.
As part of their presentation, Elder Gong and Elder Pingree shared seven principles divided into four categories that will guide the church’s use of AI. Elder Pingree said this principle was approved by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
“The moral and ethical considerations associated with the use of AI require spiritual discernment and wisdom,” Elder Pingree said. “God is the source of all truth. AI will not replace a divinely appointed source.”

Elder Gong also said that learning how to identify the influence of the Holy Spirit will help church members avoid deception if deepfakes of church leaders are made public. He encouraged relying on the Holy Spirit, wisdom, and trusted sources whenever using AI.
“Generative artificial intelligence may provide information quickly, but it cannot replace revelation or generate truth. If something does not feel right or contradicts what we know to be true, it cannot replace revelation or generate truth. If you do, try to discern before you believe,” he said.
Elder Gong said wisdom helps individuals utilize a combination of knowledge, experience and judgment when making decisions. He quoted 2 Nephi 28:30, where the Lord said through Nephi:
Finally, Elder Gong emphasized the need to seek and research information from reliable sources. He again cited the Holy Spirit as one of those sources, adding scripture, the words of the prophets, and the church’s website (ChurchofJesusChrist.org).
If an individual publishes content that is deceptive in nature, the Church will address that content through official channels.
“We need not be afraid,” Elder Gon said in his closing words. “But be careful to accept the possibility…because the purpose is that we take out the soul, which is made up of body and spirit, and integrate body and spirit, physicality and spirituality. Because I believe,” is a new way that can be a blessing to all of us as children of our Heavenly Father. ”
