Samsung Galaxy A55 5G vs Google Pixel 7a: Which midranger is better?

Samsung has announced its latest smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy A55 5G. Offered as a mid-range option, the Samsung Galaxy A series promises upgraded security features and a clearer viewing experience.

How does Samsung’s latest mid-range product compare to the Google Pixel 7a? Launched in May 2023, the Pixel 7a is Google’s current mid-range smartphone offering.

We haven’t yet been able to review the Galaxy A55 5G, but we compared its specs to the Google Pixel 7a to determine which one suits your needs better.

Galaxy A55 5G has a larger screen

Of the two devices, the Samsung Galaxy A55 5G has a slightly larger screen at 6.6 inches compared to the Pixel 7a’s 6.1-inch screen.

The Galaxy A55 also has a Super AMOLED display, which should be further enhanced thanks to Samsung’s Vision Booster. The Pixel 7a likewise has his FHD+ OLED panel.

Screen aside, the Galaxy A55 also promises a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which is higher than the Google Pixel 7a’s maximum refresh rate of 90Hz. The Galaxy A55 not only boasts a higher refresh rate, but it’s also comparable to high-end smartphones, including Samsung’s current flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra (though it doesn’t feature premium LTPO technology). Still, for a mid-range option, this is pretty impressive.

Galaxy A55 5G has three rear cameras

The Galaxy A55 has three rear cameras including a 50MP main lens, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 5MP macro lens, while the Google Pixel 7a only has two rear cameras: a 64MP main lens and a 13MP ultrawide lens. is installed.

Although we haven’t yet tested the quality of the A55’s lenses, Samsung says, “With enhanced night photography, the Samsung Galaxy A55 5G delivers better performance in poor lighting conditions compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy A54 5G. It promises to take clear and vivid photos.

While I haven’t tested the A55, I did test the Pixel 7a’s camera and was thoroughly impressed with its image quality. We concluded that the Pixel 7a’s main camera is “reliable and doesn’t require endless adjustments to consistently take good photos.”

Similar to Samsung’s Nightography, Google also has Night Sight. Night Scene mode is a low-light shooting mode that combines multiple exposures to enhance light. We were thoroughly impressed with this mode and found it to perform better, be faster, and be more reliable than the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Galaxy A55 5G is protected by Knox Vault

The Galaxy A55, along with the slightly cheaper A35 5G, are the first Samsung A-series smartphones to be protected by Samsung Knox. Samsung Knox is Samsung Galaxy’s multi-layered security platform designed to protect your sensitive information and protect you from vulnerabilities.

Similarly, the Google Pixel 7a is equipped with a VPN powered by Google One at no additional charge, providing additional security and privacy for users. Anti-phishing and anti-malware protection are also included for added security.

Additionally, the Galaxy A55 is promised four OS upgrades and five years of security updates, on par with the Google Pixel 7a. However, since the Google Pixel 7a was released last year, it will stop receiving updates a year earlier than the Galaxy A55.

Galaxy A55 5G has a bigger battery

The A55 has a larger battery, with a typical 5,000mAh cell compared to the Pixel 7a’s smaller 4,385mAh. Although we haven’t tested the battery power, Samsung claims that the A55 can support his two-day battery life.

When we tested the Google Pixel 7a, we found that the battery felt “a little outdated” and that heavy smartphone users might struggle to get through a full day.

Galaxy A55 5G is a little cheaper

Although it’s a new smartphone, the starting price of the Samsung Galaxy A55 5G is actually a little lower. The A55 starts at £439 with 8GB memory and 128GB storage, while the Google Pixel 7a starts at £449 with the same memory and storage, making Samsung’s new mid-range slightly more affordable than Google’s offering.

The Google Pixel 7a is available now and the Samsung Galaxy A55 will be available from March 20, 2024.
