INMARSAT Maritime is testing what it claims is the world’s first floating 5G mesh network.
5G mesh technology is intended to enable high-speed connectivity even in difficult conditions at sea.
The satellite communications company has signed a memorandum of understanding with energy company Aramco to deploy high-bandwidth connectivity to Aramco’s offshore operations in the Arabian Gulf.
Inmarsat expects the test to demonstrate range “far beyond” what was previously possible.
With this technology, Aramco believes it can optimize its offshore operations and enable features such as intelligent remote maintenance and remote operations.
This includes monitoring and measurement with IoT sensors, operational assistance for staff equipped with augmented reality headsets, new safety and security features, and the potential for cost savings and efficient energy use.
