- OPPO has published two whitepapers that look at what 6G is expected to offer in the future.
- As with 5G, many of the experiences will be entertainment-focused.
- Thanks to the speeds offered by 6G, a mobile metaverse could become a reality.
After the dust settles from Mobile World Congress 2024, OPPO has released two whitepapers on 6G.
In particular, the company has been looking at how 6G will enable the creation of two potentially large ecosystems: mobile AI computing and the mobile metaverse.
While it will still be some time before 6G is deployed at the same speeds as 5G in recent years, some of the theoretical speeds being discussed for this mobile broadband standard show that it is significantly faster than what is currently available. could be faster. Via 5G.
To that end, 6G is estimated to deliver speeds of up to 100 gigabits per second (Gbps), or about 1,000 times faster than 5G’s average mobile data download speeds.
According to OPPO, reaching these theoretical speeds will allow “the physical and virtual worlds to converge” through “faster and multidimensional data transmission, enhanced AI capabilities, and improved data recognition.” There is a possibility.
Here, the company “proposed a ‘minimized kernel’ system design that provides a basic set of common functionality accessible through a minimal core subsystem, along with a set of subsystems optimized for specific use cases.”
“By using a ‘minimal to complete kernel switching’ approach, the proposed system design enables on-demand access to the optimal processing unit, creating an efficient and flexible network with low cost and low power consumption. performance and provide the foundation for future communications systems,” he added.
All of this could lead to the creation of the aforementioned mobile metaverse. AI has overtaken the Metaverse as a recent technology, but the speeds offered by 6G could make accessing persistent digital ecosystems much more viable and eliminate the need for specialized headsets. .
However, OPPO says several challenges need to be addressed to make this a reality. Here, the company’s white paper explains that making this concept a reality requires elements such as immersive displays, environmental sensing, real-time control, and ubiquitous coverage.
“6G requires the ability to comprehensively map to the physical world. Therefore, in addition to the high data rates, low latency, and high reliability that 5G already offers, it also provides ubiquitous connectivity and sensing of the physical environment. We also need to expand its functionality.”
“The industry vision for 6G requires that 6G systems achieve higher system performance than 5G in a wider range of usage scenarios than 5G, while achieving truly universal implementation across hundreds of vertical industries. It is also necessary to achieve a “minimization” system that significantly reduces installation and operational costs.”
There are quite a few technologies, conditions, and aspects that need to be integrated before we can all use our smartphones to take advantage of the mobile metaverse, and 6G will be the backbone that brings it all together.
“Faced with this seemingly contradictory design goal, the only viable solution is to design a large number of ‘flexibly integrated’ subsystems on a minimized common kernel. This design… “The 6G subsystems for each scenario can be properly isolated and optimized, resulting in a ‘simple and versatile’ 6G system that provides features and capabilities only when they are really needed.” I continued.
