Qualcomm, a US-based semiconductor manufacturer, is making bold moves in the Indian market. According to a report from new agency Moneycontrol, the company plans to unveil a new chipset by the end of this year that will facilitate the launch of affordable 5G smartphones priced under $99.
The report cited a Qualcomm executive as saying that the latest chipset could encourage 2G users in India to transition to smartphone-compatible 5G environments.
“Qualcomm is also working with India’s top carrier Reliance Jio and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop and launch mobile phones. The device will support the 5G standalone architecture currently offered by Jio.
“Gigabit 5G smartphones feature dedicated, low-cost, customized processors with SA-2Rx capabilities to deliver Gigabit speeds on 5G networks,” said Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President and Handset Division. general manager Chris Patrick told Moneycontrol in Barcelona.
