An investigation was underway at Beverly Vista Middle School in Beverly Hills on Monday after some students allegedly used artificial intelligence to create nude images of their classmates.
One student, who requested anonymity, said, “It’s very scary that people won’t be able to come to school with peace of mind.” “They are afraid of people showing off explicit photos of themselves.”
Last week, the Beverly Hills Unified School District began an investigation with the Beverly Hills Police Department after school administrators were alerted to nude photos being circulated among a group of students.
The images included some of the students’ faces, which were superimposed on AI-generated nude bodies, according to the Beverly Hills Unified School District.
“We will be looking at appropriate discipline to help our students understand that there are consequences and responsibilities for their actions,” said Dr. Michael Breggie, superintendent of the Beverly Hills Unified School District.
District officials said in a statement that they were “appalled” by the misuse of AI.
“This new technology is becoming increasingly accessible to people of all ages,” the district said. “Parents, please work with us to discuss this dangerous behavior with your children. Students, please tell your friends how offensive and inappropriate this image manipulation is.”
Lawmakers at the state and federal level are said to be exploring ways to deal with incidents involving artificial intelligence, but Breggie said school districts need more support from lawmakers.
“School districts aren’t known for having to argue with legislators to change laws,” Breggie said. “The security of the law clearly outweighs the technology we have.”
Some parents said they hope Beverly Vista Middle School takes swift action.
“It’s got to have some big consequences,” said one parent.
It is unclear how many students were targeted and how many were involved in creating the images.
The students targeted by the fake AI images were receiving counseling, according to the Beverly Hills Unified School District.
