[Barcelona, Spain, February 25, 2024] Huawei today hosted the 5G Beyond Growth Summit at MWC Barcelona 2024. At the summit, Li Peng, Huawei’s Corporate Senior Vice President and President of ICT Sales & Services, will discuss how carriers can achieve business success with 5G and how 5.5G will further unlock network potential and create new We discussed ways to create growth opportunities.
“5G is on the right path to business success,” Lee said. 5G began commercialization in 2019 and has already gained 1.5 billion 5G users around the world in the past five years. It took him nine years for 4G to make this happen. Currently, 20% of the world’s mobile phone subscribers are using 5G. These users generate his 30% of the total mobile traffic and contribute his 40% of mobile service revenue.
“5.5G will enter commercial use in 2024, and the convergence of 5.5G, AI, and cloud will help carriers unlock the potential for new applications and capabilities,” Li said.
He further said that carriers around the world should focus on high-quality networking, multidimensional monetization, emerging services, and generative AI to seize these opportunities.

A high-quality network remains the foundation of business success
Mobile users have been proven to be willing to purchase experience upgrades for their mobile packages if the network quality is high enough. Therefore, the traffic generated by these users is expected to increase significantly, allowing carriers to maximize the value of their traffic. This has led more and more carriers to propose strategic goals that include building high-quality 5G networks.
For example, some operators in the Middle East have already deployed Massive MIMO networks, and the optimal experience provided by these networks has led to successful 5G FWA deployments. 5G FWA is currently connected to approximately 3 million households and is a powerful driver of revenue growth for carriers.
Multidimensional monetization maximizes the value of each bit
More than 20% of the world’s 5G carriers have already adopted a speed-based pricing model. For example, one carrier in Thailand recently released a 5G Boost Mode add-on. This allows subscribers to choose different speed tiers that best suit their usage needs. This model helped the carrier increase his ARPU by about 23%. Another Chinese carrier has launched an uplink guarantee package to provide live streamers with a smooth, high-definition live streaming experience. This package was very popular and helped the carrier’s ARPU increase by more than 70%.

New services enable long-term sustainable growth
New services such as New Calling, Cloudphone, and glasses-free 3D are gaining consumer attention. For example, value-added features such as New Calling’s virtual avatars are becoming very popular. Users are also willing to pay more for services that provide a real-time experience, such as one-stop car insurance claims.
5G is also being introduced in many industries. In China, more than 50,000 private 5G network use cases are in commercial use in more than 50 industries. New features of 5.5G such as deterministic latency, precise positioning, and passive IoT are expected to create more opportunities for carriers in the B2B market.
Generative AI brings the mobile industry into the age of all intelligence
According to IDC, global AI mobile phone shipments are expected to reach 170 million units in 2024, accounting for 15% of total smartphone shipments. The next generation of AI phones will have more powerful storage, display, and image processing capabilities. AIGC applications powered by these phones will generate hundreds of billions of GB of data and create new opportunities for carriers.
Mr. Li concluded his remarks at the summit by pledging to “work with carriers to unlock the potential of 5G and 5.5G and drive incredible new growth.”
