Telstra today announced that it has partnered with Ericson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and Qualcomm Technologies Inc. to achieve a new world record for 5G uplink speeds of 340Mbps using the latest software, spectrum and technology innovations.
Ericsson Media Release | February 15, 2024
The new speed record is 100 times the typical 3G uplink speed.
This world first enables Telstra customers to enjoy faster and more reliable data uploads on their 5G Standalone (SA) devices, improving the video, photo and live stream sharing experience.
The new 5G standalone uplink feature combines Telstra’s owned mid-band spectrum to create a massive 140MHz channel for transmitting data from devices to the network.
This is complemented by a 240MHz channel for receiving data from the 5G SA network to the device, delivering downlink speeds of up to 3.6 Gbps and uplink speeds of 340 Mbps. This is the world’s fastest using spectrum below 6 GHz.
Sri Amirthalingam, Global Network and Technology Executive at Telstra, said: “This is a major milestone for Telstra and its customers. We are proud to be the first in the world to offer this cutting-edge 5G uplink capability, allowing our customers to share content on the go. It will improve your experience when doing so.”
Testing was completed using a mobile test device equipped with Qualcomm Technologies’ latest Snapdragon® 5G modem RF system and an existing market NetGear Nighthawk M6 Pro mobile broadband device on a live commercial network on the Gold Coast.
Ericsson’s latest software brings together various combinations of frequency ranges and types to enable a single 5G uplink and downlink data channel.
Aggregating carrier bands significantly increases uplink speeds, while combining these frequencies allows the use of lower band carriers, improving coverage and performance for 5G SA networks.
Amirthalingam said: “The uplink and downlink 5G data channels work together to provide a seamless and nearly symmetrical 5G service, enabling data-intensive applications such as augmented reality and virtual reality, as well as photos and memorable movies. Meet the growing demand for sharing moments with friends.
“This technology also incorporates advanced capabilities into base stations that can prioritize different types of data and applications and support future differentiated services such as network slicing.”
“In addition to this, Telstra also has the option of using the N5 (850MHz) carrier, which currently serves its 3G network.”
“Our latest 5G standalone uplink speed achievement is 100 times faster than typical 3G uplink speeds, which is great news for our customers. Links are becoming increasingly loaded and faster speeds and coverage will provide a better experience.”
“The ability to use low-band frequencies and reuse 3G low-band 850 MHz frequencies to provide 5G SA coverage when the 3G network shuts down on June 30, 2024 will improve coverage depth and The benefit is a better 5G experience for our customers.”
“This is a further example of how we are at the forefront of 5G innovation and investment, and how we are committed to providing Australia with the best and most cutting-edge network.”
To test and validate this capability, Telstra worked with long-term partners Ericsson, a global leader in 5G network equipment, and Qualcomm, one of the world’s leading wireless chipset companies.
Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand, said: “Ericsson’s latest software capabilities enable Telstra to leverage our full spectrum portfolio to deliver much better data rates while delivering wider coverage.” You will be able to explore new experiences, such as applications, offered by 5G standalone, which will help monetize your network. ”
Durga Malladi, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Technology Planning and Edge Solutions, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. It proves that it has the potential to significantly improve and enable new experiences. For consumers. ”
This latest achievement brings Telstra’s global firsts to 53 since the launch of 3G. Only through collaborative efforts with industry and strategic partners such as Ericsson and Qualcomm can we deliver the innovation and leadership that our customers can benefit from.
