AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department (APD) now has a new interactive dashboard detailing the city’s crime statistics.
Last year, the City Council passed a resolution requiring APD to post different monthly data on its portal. The department already posted monthly data in the form of a “Chief’s Report,” but the dashboard display is a new feature.
You can now view crime by city council election, rates and definitions of the city’s most serious crimes, and a breakdown of various annual statistics.
“It’s great. It’s exciting. We’re getting open data from police departments. It’s a great start, but there are things that could be improved,” said Steven Rivas, a public policy consultant in Austin who previously worked as a 911 dispatcher. Yes,” he said. In West Texas.
He added he would also like to see data on daily 911 calls and staffing numbers.
University student Tavon Tasbee said he appreciated the idea of the dashboard and believed he and his colleagues would benefit from the detailed look at car thefts and vehicle case burglaries.
“I would definitely use something like this. My mom personally sends me all the crime reports that happen in Austin and Texas,” she said. “I’m a college student, so I walk around a lot, but there have been a lot of robberies in my neighborhood.”
In the future, APD plans to incorporate additional dashboards for cadets in training, retirements, separations, calls for service, and more.
