Tests across wireless portfolio demonstrate Samsung’s virtualized Open RAN leadership and Massive MIMO radio advancements
February 12, 2024
Samsung Electronics announced that it has completed Open RAN compatibility and interoperability testing of commercial-grade LTE and 5G NR radios for Verizon’s network. Leveraging Samsung’s extensive expertise in the global vRAN and Open RAN markets, Verizon and Samsung have taken their collaboration a step forward by embracing openness.
In a series of tests conducted at Samsung’s Dallas, Texas, laboratory, the companies used Samsung’s market-leading radios that are compliant with O-RAN specifications. This test included multiple Samsung radios, including a CAT-A radio 4T4R supporting 700/850 MHz and AWS/PCS bands, a CAT-B 64T64R Massive MIMO C-band radio, and a 16T16R C-band and CBRS dual-band radio. will appear.
This test highlights Samsung’s massive MIMO leadership, particularly with the 64T64R Massive MIMO radio that Verizon has already deployed across large commercial vRAN networks across the country. The test results demonstrate Samsung’s ability to handle advanced Massive MIMO radio integration. The 64T64R Massive MIMO radio is more complex compared to the simple CAT-A radio.
Both companies use Keysight Technologies’ Open RAN Distributed Unit (O-DU) emulator to test O-RAN’s mandatory and optional beamforming capabilities within the same Massive MIMO unit, delivering promised performance improvements Did. This level of compliance testing helps ensure new open RAN networks operate as expected while delivering all the capabilities that next-generation 5G solutions will enable.
“We are excited to achieve Open RAN compliance on five key radios in our portfolio that are compliant with the latest O-RAN and 3GPP standards,” said Jisha Hall, Vice President, Operations, Network Business, Samsung Electronics America. says. “This collaboration demonstrates how Samsung is leveraging first-mover operators like Verizon, backed by our strong ecosystem and proven expertise in commercial networks for Tier 1 operators in North America, Europe and Asia. “We are supporting virtualized Open RAN deployments.”
“O-RAN is a critical component of our network evolution strategy,” said Steven Rice, Verizon’s vice president of network planning. By leveraging O-RAN radio and software-driven infrastructure with industry-leading partners like Samsung and Keysight, we are delivering a more open and Continue to drive the industry towards an interoperable environment. ”
“Keysight is excited to collaborate with Samsung and Verizon on successful open RAN testing and looks forward to continued collaboration to advance next-generation network solutions.”Keysight Wireless Testing said Peng Cao, Group Vice President and General Manager. “Our leadership in O-RAN standards and testing enables the industry to confidently build, test, and deploy cutting-edge, interoperable open RAN solutions in real-world networks.”
In 2021, Samsung supported the commercial launch of Verizon’s first 5G C-band network using its vRAN solution. With this, Samsung has successfully built the world’s largest vRAN commercial network and is set to establish a new milestone in 2022. Samsung and Verizon’s continued collaboration strengthens our commitment to Open RAN and our leadership in enabling virtualized open networks with greater flexibility, faster time to market, and unparalleled performance.
Samsung has successfully pioneered the delivery of 5G end-to-end solutions, including chipsets, radios, and cores. Through continuous research and development, Samsung is driving the industry’s 5G network advancements with a market-leading product portfolio, from vRAN 3.0, Open RAN, core to private network solutions and AI-powered automation tools.
