Telstra Telstra and Swedish telecom vendor Ericsson are deploying Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) microprocessors in Ericsson’s bare metal cloud environment, known as Cloud Native Infrastructure Solution (CNIS), to enable energy efficiency for Telstra’s 5G core capabilities Did.
In this deployment, the companies will leverage high-core density AMD Genoa processors, representing AMD’s 4th generation EPYC family of server processors, on closed-loop liquid-cooled server systems powered by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).
The companies claimed that the combination of AMD’s processors and HPE’s closed-loop liquid cooling system reduces overall system cooling requirements compared to traditional air cooling.
Telstra and Ericsson used the new hardware to host containerized workloads for Ericsson’s Packet Core Gateway and Packet Core Controller applications.

In addition to providing liquid-cooled server and processor technology, Telstra and Ericsson also worked to improve Telstra’s infrastructure footprint by devising a solution with power management capabilities and a wireless access network.
Ericsson’s CNIS solution, packet core gateway and core controller, has demonstrated up to 49% reduction in energy consumption.
“The latest deployment of Ericsson 5G core capabilities using next-generation AMD processors on liquid-cooled infrastructure has the potential to deliver a game-changer in performance and efficiency, benefiting individuals and businesses across Australia. “Perhaps most importantly, this new milestone delivers tangible progress towards contributing to achieving the T25 climate change targets,” said Shailin Sehgal, Telstra Executive Network Applications and Cloud. Masu.
Ericsson’s ANZ head Emilio Romeo said: “This technology is an important milestone in increasing the sustainability of the 5G mobile communications infrastructure that millions of Australians rely on every day.” .
