Microsoft’s Xbox sales have been shrouded in mystery since 2016. Stopped reporting hardware sales. In our regulatory battles during Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, we learned: PS4 beat Xbox 2:1. Now, looking at financial reports detailing the number of next-generation consoles out there, a little math seems to reveal that Microsoft’s latest consoles aren’t doing all that well.
According to the slides from Take-Two Games Third Quarter Financial Report, approximately 77 million “9th generation” consoles have been sold as of December 2023. 9th generation represents Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Even if Microsoft refuses to provide sales statistics, it’s not too hard to figure out how much of that 77 million units is Xbox and how much is PS5. Instead, you can look at Sony’s statistics revealed in December 2023. 50 million PS5 units sold to consumers. Assuming Sony has sold over a million more consoles since then, Xbox may only have sold around 25 million units worldwide. Add all this up and Sony’s PS5 could have sold twice as much as his Xbox Series X/S.
