One of the key takeaways from the recent Wireless Access Providers Association (WAPA) Gauteng regional event in Krugersdorp was that Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) are expanding their WiFi use cases to support their business. We needed to identify new opportunities to unlock growth. duxbury networkingSouth Africa’s leading networking solutions distributor, was one of the speakers and sponsors of the event.
Although the upper 6 GHz spectrum will not be released domestically for the foreseeable future, WISPs can use the lower 6 GHz spectrum for indoor use. This provides WISPS with several opportunities in markets it has not been involved in before. For example, WISPS can leverage opportunities in smart homes, cities, and even industrial Internet of Things (IOT) applications to provide connectivity to devices such as: Smart thermostats, security cameras, sensor networks, and more.
At the event, WAPA indicated that the lower 6GHz band will soon be opened for outdoor use, following discussions with regulator ICASA. This strengthens WISP’s point-to-point and point-to-multipoint value proposition.
“The event was well-attended. It not only provided great networking opportunities, but also highlighted some of the technologies WISPs can use to benefit, such as WiFi 6E. “This provides increased spectrum availability, increased throughput, improved multi-user performance, improved reliability in congested environments, enhanced security, and reduced latency,” said Duxbury Networking’s Wireless Business. Unit Manager Teresa Huysamen said. “As a leading technology distributor, Duxbury provides the local market with access to powerful Cambium networking solutions that leverage WiFi 6E, enabling WISPs to deliver high-throughput power to business and residential subscribers in urban, suburban, and rural environments. But more than that, WiFi 6E provides a platform for WISPs to open up other opportunities in WiFi that they weren’t able to consider before.”
WISPs can take advantage of the performance improvements that WiFi 6E brings to offer premium services such as high-definition video streaming, gaming, and virtual reality experiences. Additionally, you can explore new revenue streams through tiered plans, managed services, and other value-added services for business and residential customers. Therefore, early adoption of WiFi 6E will give WISPs a significant competitive advantage in the market and enable them to deliver technology that delivers high-performance connectivity.
The availability of lower 6GHz spectrum increases the available spectrum, resulting in gigabit-level speeds, making it ideal for high-bandwidth applications. WISPs need to think about what they can do with this additional capacity and expand their strategies beyond simply providing Internet service.
“At a time when cable breaks are common, fiber is unreliable, and 5G is still unproven in South Africa, WiFi 6E opens up a world of possibilities for WISPs. Perfectly positioned to provide reliable, high-speed Internet connections that consumers rely on for personal use, WiFi 6E will help WISPs improve their existing services and open new market possibilities. provides an ideal platform to explore this,” concludes Huysamen.
