Global 5G deployment is expected to account for more than half (51%) of mobile connections by 2029, according to a report by mobile operator lobby group GSMA.
If the GSMA’s predictions are correct, 5G will become the dominant connectivity technology for mobile devices around the world.
5G is already experiencing incredible growth, increasing from 1 billion connections by the end of 2022 to 1.6 billion connections by 2023.
GSMA data shows that businesses are outpacing consumer 5G growth in IoT. In 2023, consumer connections accounted for 10.5 billion IoT connections, and businesses accumulated more than 10.7 billion IoT connections.
GSMA predicts this growth will continue due to the rise of smart buildings and smart manufacturing. By 2030, corporate connections could reach 38.5 billion, more than twice as much.
The steady adoption of generative AI by businesses was also noted in the GSMA report.

Approximately 56% of mobile carriers have informed the GSMA that they are experimenting with implementing this technology.
In its report, GSMA cited the rise of generative AI chatbots and AI-generated content as key catalysts for 5G growth.
Peter Jarich, head of GSMI intelligence, said the findings reflect the growing number of use cases for 5G technology beyond enhanced mobile broadband and its traffic requirements.
“Opportunities are now emerging in areas such as API monetization and 5G RedCap for enterprise IoT, all supported by 5G-Advanced and 5G SA networks,” he said.
“5G SA delivers on the early promise of 5G, especially when it can meet slicing, low latency, and large-scale IoT capabilities tied to enterprise service needs. 5G-Advanced expands on that even further. Just do it,” Jarich said.
