The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is reminding the public to protect their SingPass credentials. Scammers are posting fraudulent job listings online requesting her SingPass details under the guise of a job screening. At least 47 people have fallen victim to such schemes since January 1, 2024, and these offers are often encountered on platforms such as Telegram and WhatsApp.
Victims are instructed to change their SingPass email and phone number, enter their password, and share a screenshot of their NRIC. Scammers use this information to register multiple bank accounts and obtain profile data for illegal purposes.

Despite a nearly 50% increase in fraud cases from 33,669 in 2022 to 50,376 in 2023, the Singapore Police Force’s proactive cybersecurity measures against fraud and cybercrime are yielding positive results. Economically, this is good news. Although the number of incidents increased, total losses in 2023 decreased by just 1.3% to $651.8 million from $660.7 million in 2022, the first decline in five years, demonstrating progress in fraud prevention efforts. It shows.
Furthermore, the average loss per fraud incident decreased significantly from $20,824 in 2022 to $13,999 in 2023, a decrease of approximately 32.8%. Notably, 55.6% of fraud cases reported a loss of $2,000 or less, suggesting that the population is becoming more resilient to fraud.
This positive trajectory is supported by the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), Singapore Cybersecurity Authority (CSA), Smart Nation Group (SNG), Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and private sector partners. Their concerted actions aimed at preventing fraud and raising public awareness are making a significant contribution to mitigating losses and empowering individuals to protect themselves.
Although challenges continue, especially with social engineering scams and deception via social media platforms, personal vigilance remains important. By staying informed, paying attention, and leveraging resources provided by government agencies and stakeholders, individuals can strengthen their defenses against evolving cyber threats.
A breakdown of the types of scams reveals an alarming trend: recruitment scams, e-commerce scams, fake friend phone scams, phishing scams, and investment scams dominate. However, increased awareness and concerted efforts are making progress in fraud prevention, offering hope for a safer digital environment for everyone.
The Singapore Police Force has significantly stepped up efforts to combat the growing threat of fraud and cybercrime, adopting a multi-pronged approach that includes enforcement, engagement and education. SPF’s strategy relies on strong public-private partnerships, particularly through the Anti-Fraud Command (ASCom), working with more than 100 institutions including banks, fintech companies and e-commerce platforms. This facilitates quick freezing of accounts and recovery of funds, reducing losses for victims. In addition, the SPF carries out targeted enforcement operations against fraudulent tactics, resulting in thousands of phone lines being shut down and fraudsters being arrested.
SPF works with foreign law enforcement agencies to dismantle cross-border fraud syndicates, leading to successful joint operations and the arrest of perpetrators. Participation in internationally coordinated operations such as INTERPOL’s Operation First Light and Operation Hechi demonstrate SPF’s global commitment to the fight against fraud.
Alongside law enforcement, SPF proactively prevents fraud through initiatives such as Project ASTRO, sending SMS alerts to potential victims and helping them recognize and avoid fraud. Outreach programs target different groups, such as migrant workers and the elderly, to raise awareness and empower communities to report scams.
Education is essential to SPF’s anti-fraud efforts. Scam Public Education Office (SPEO) leads public awareness campaigns and shares anti-scam resources. Platforms such as the ScamShield app and the Add, Check, Tell framework allow individuals to protect themselves from fraud. Additionally, collaborative efforts with content creators and organizations will strengthen anti-fraud messages and foster a collective response to fraud.
SPF’s overall strategy emphasizes our commitment to protecting our communities from fraud and cybercrime. Through collaborative cybersecurity efforts, economic losses are decreasing despite increased fraud, and resilience and public safety are increasing through a multifaceted approach to compliance, vigilance, and awareness. Proven.
