Accelerating technological advances are putting pressure on the Department of Defense to step up research into 5G, a technology that will play a key role on today’s digitally-driven battlefield.
Potomac Officers Club 2024 5G Forum On May 22, elite experts from the public and private sectors will have the opportunity to discuss a range of 5G-related topics, including edge computing and integrated joint all-domain command and control. The event will include: Kevin MulvihillThe Deputy Chief Information Officer for Command, Control and Communications at the Department of Defense will be the keynote speaker. 5G Forum Event Page Want to learn more? register.
Private companies have already demonstrated the power of 5G, and the Department of Defense is currently evaluating how industry capabilities can enhance military operations. Read on to learn how 5G will benefit the warfighter.
Smart Warehouse
Smart warehouses – storage facilities that use automated machines to carry out routine tasks – are already in use by some civilian organizations — Amazon is one of several adopters — and the Defense Department is looking at ways such facilities can improve logistics operations.
The latest step in this effort is the grand opening of a new smart warehouse at Naval Base Coronado in May 2022. 5G Smart Warehouse NetworkThe facility is intended to integrate 5G capabilities into the logistics process between shore installations and naval units.
Joint All-Domain Command and Control
Communications is the foundation of the Department of Defense’s CJADC2 initiative, which aims to enable seamless information sharing between U.S. forces, allies and partners. Transferring large amounts of data between forces around the world requires powerful network capabilities, and 5G is the answer to this challenge.
Military units have begun experimenting with 5G in the context of CJADC2. One program currently considering 5G is the U.S. Marine Corps’ Project Dynamis, which the military refers to more broadly as Uniting for a united front‘ reported Breaking Defense.
This project Four Initiatives While it encompasses a variety of technologies and training, he said, ultimately CJADC2 is about “the kill chain and how do we automate the kill chain?” Colonel Jason QuinterHe is the commander of the 38th Marine Air Control Group, U.S. Naval Institute News reported.
5G is part of this modernization process: At the WEST 2024 conference, Quinter said 5G will be a “critical building block for networks going forward,” especially at the tactical edge.
He noted that the single-channel radio technology warfighters rely on is outdated and no longer effective.
“We need to replace that with smart devices, any smart devices,” Quinter said. “As long as they can be loaded with the software we need to defeat the enemy, it’s that simple. 5G technology can revolutionize command and control networks across the military.”
Other feature optimizations
As the communications component of various DoD projects, 5G technology also needs to be able to mesh with other capabilities the DoD is implementing.
Artificial intelligence is one of the emerging technologies the Department of Defense is working to perfect. Dr. Martin WeissHe is the director of Future G applied research and technical lead for resilient and open commercial solutions in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Technology at the Department of Defense. Integrating AI into edge networks It will then use it to “enhance how spectrum sharing is achieved.”
He shared these thoughts during a panel discussion at the Potomac Officers Club’s 10th annual Defense Research and Development Summit in January. The conversation included: Juan RamirezThe director of the 5G Cross-Functional Team for the Defense Department’s Office of the Chief Information Officer said his department is evaluating how AI can be used for predictive maintenance and remote targeting.
